Part I: Teaching with your Interactive Glass Whiteboard
Teaching with an Interactive Whiteboard can be a new experience for many instructors; they’re an incredibly powerful tool that is becoming widely used in many private and public teaching institutions. If you’re new to teaching on an interactive glass whiteboard, there are a few things to know:
Do – Learn how to use it
One of the biggest issues with interactive glass whiteboards is that many teachers are still very new to the concept. They’ve probably used a traditional whiteboard, a projector and the internet in three different ways, but working with the combination of the three can be a bit new and overwhelming. Luckily there are plenty of training courses and even summer schools that teachers can attend to learn how to use the great features of these boards.
Don’t – Be overwhelmed
Any new tool can be a bit overwhelming, but don’t fret; interactive whiteboards are still a very new technology, and you likely won’t learn everything overnight. One of the biggest issues with interactive whiteboards is that instructors get frustrated and rather work without them. Thousands of dollars of technology then sit unused in the classrooms, and schools become more reluctant to purchase cutting-edge technology for fear of this happening again.
Do – Get Creative
Interactive whiteboards are meant to be used for creative teachers; you can get your students involved, capture their attention and teach in ways you’ve never thought of before. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box with your new tool. You can create calendars, teach how to draw, and even let your students take control, they may have some of the best ideas for the board.
Don’t – Teach with your back to your audience
Teaching with an interactive glass whiteboards isn’t so different from teaching on a regular one. You should still be animated and ready to answer any questions. Even though an interactive whiteboard is a great teaching tool, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s only a tool. You are still the instructor and you create the lesson plans, and instruct and teach your students. While an interactive glassboard could surely teach your students for you, it takes away from the teaching experience if you rely too heavily on the board.
