Part II: Glass Dry Erase Board Questions
How long will a glassboard last? – How long would you like to keep it? Glassboards last for decades, since they never run the risk of being stained, like a traditional whiteboard. Most traditional whiteboards wipe clean very easily for the first few years, then, no matter what cleaning products you use, you will run into staining and streaking, which no chemical cleaner can erase. Some traditional whiteboards will stain sooner, depending on how you take care of them. They can stain quite easily if you don’t let the dry erase ink dry before erasing, since you’re essentially rubbing the ink into the board. The dry erase markers have the same ink as a permanent marker, they are just coated in a special polymer that separates the ink from the board. If you aren’t careful with your cleaning regimen, you could be damaging your board early on. Luckily, glassboards don’t have this problem. Glass allows for just about any kind of marker to come off easily, so the residual ink won’t ever ruin the board. Furthermore, they’re practically indestructible, so if it never stains and never breaks, it will last as long as you want it!
What else can I use on my board? – Like we mentioned before, glass allows for just about any marker, paint or ink to be used on its surface without ruining the board. You can use permanent markers, grease pens, paint glass markers, or even regular paint. If you want to use paint markers or paint, you’ll just need to clean the board more thoroughly when you’re done. This is great for offices and classrooms, since you can use your board to create scheduling grids, calendars, and even break the board into sections by backpainting it.
Why does glass work so well as a dry erase surface? – Glass is a great product to replace dry erase boards, since it barely scratches and is very close to being a non-porous surface. Traditional whiteboards are made with a chemical coating, that is a non-porous surface, but since it’s synthetic, it can easily be scratched and cut. These cuts allow bacteria to build up in the boards; something glassboards don’t need to worry about. As long as you follow instructions on how to care for your glassboard, you’ll be using it for years to come.
